Hello Rich
It was such a pleasure meeting you in Carmel this weekend, learning about your father's racing legacy and the privilege to purchase the Dave MacDonald 198 Cobra from you.
Our lives have been enriched by this experience, we look forward to meeting your mom and to what ever else the future will bring as a result of metting you.

Hugs, Grace and Dave

Thank you for creating this wonderful website full of so many great memories of a great man and a unique time for auto racing!

I found this when looking up my husband's late father and doing some ancestry investigation. We did not know how involved he was in developing the Shelby Cobra! The information and pictures you posted have been very helpful.

We are sorry to hear of Dave McDonald's passing. He was a dear, and talented, man and is greatly missed by many.Thank you and be well!

Warmly, Sharon G. >X

I noticed in the listing of all of Dave's races that he raced in Del Mar in December of 1961 and the result was (?). I was at that race and saw Dave win. I remember that he diced with a Porsche 356 throughout the race. He blasted past the Porsche on the straight, the Porsche ate him up on the curvy section. He won because the finish line was on the straight. It may have been the first road race I attended and I remember it like it was yesterday!

Just finished the book"Black Noon", thoroughly enjoyed it. I work for Audrain Auto Museum in Newport Road Island. We have the 3/63 Cooper Monaco that Dave won with before before he died at Indy. We are presently completely restoring the car. It is such a privilege to have a piece of history and to able to preserve it for the future! Dave was truly a great driver!!!!!!!!!

(80) Hello,

When I was twelve years old my Dad took me to the 1964 Indianapolis 500.

In recent years I have digitized the photos my Dad took of the pace car laps at Indianapolis and would be happy to share them with you.

Thank you for putting together this awesome web site.

Dave

Rich and Vicki must have been babies when their father died? It is great the family gets to attend all these functions and stay involved and keep Dave's memory alive.

I hope that I am correct in this recollection,as it has been many, many years, but I recall a picture (that I don't see here), either in R&T or Sports Car Graphic, early in Dave's career, where he was being doused with water in the cockpit of a sports racer of some kind, on a very hot day at some track (Riverside?). Even at my young age then, the picture struck me as the quintessential young driver, giving everything for the sake of competition.I have looked for it since then, but I've not found it.In any case, thank you for making this website. It brought back some great memories. Tom B.

Thank you for the comment Tom. The photo you're referring to is from the 1963 LA Times Grand Prix at Riverside where Dave ran Shelby King Cobra CM/1/63 to victory. Go here to see several photos of Dave getting doused with water after the race: [www.davemacdonald.net]

Daves friendship with my father, and visits to his home had a hug influence on my fascination of fast cars, especially the midget racers in his garage.I am in the middle of building a tribute 69 ZL-1 Vette and would love it if one of your family could friend me on face book as I would love to do something to honor him on my car.My dads name was Max,a good friend of Travis, and my dad had a 58 triump tr-3 with a 283 if that rings anyones bell.I will always remember the thrill of the rides when my father and I would come to visit! Thanks for your consideration, and all of Daves contrabutions to the sport.Best Regards,Steve

It's hard to read any report about US road racing in the early 1960's without coming across the name of Dave McDonald. He was obviously quite a talented driver. No doubt, had he lived Dave's name would be as well known today as those of AJ, Dan, and Mario are.
Your site is a great way for those of us who were too young at the time to learn more about the man.

I was born in 1972. The Indy 500 was/is the only sporting event that my father cared about. We would make sure we were watching it every Memorial Day and since then I have been to 15 500s. I just read the book Black Noon, that lead to googling for more information about Mr. Macdonald and Mr. Sacks. I came across this website and spent several hours looking at the history here. You have a wonderful website! Its a very nice tribute!

Superb! It is nice to see a website dedicated to the races of Dave MacDonald. He was the favorite sports car driver of our group of friends and this brings me back to so many fond memories. We saw Dave race in California and at the riverside race track I recall he won a couple of races. Dave was truly a gifted driver. Thank you

So glad that Dave is being remembered. I saw him drive many times, and felt he was definitely one of the very best. And, I remember how saddened I was to hear of his tragic death. One of my favorite photos I shot of him was as he accelerated hard out of the final turn before the pits at Laguna Seca driving Shelby's King Cobra in 1963, with a big grin on his face. That's how I remember him.

This is an excellent site! Thank you for keeping Dave's memory alive. Drivers like Dave don't come along often, he had talent very few others could match. Sad day in racing when he died

There are photos on your website I'd really like to use in an upcoming book. Dave is a big part of this book since it deals with road courses raced on in the 1960s

Can you help me?

I met Dave as he was related to my fathers side of the family (his step father George H McDonald who lived in Eagle Rock). I remember visiting one day when I was young and he was at his parents house and I got to sit in the car and that is still a precious memory knowing what happened

I just finished reading "Black Noon". I had just read the part where Sherry arrived back in LA. When Richie knew he was not going to see his Dad ever again. I had lost my Dad in an accident at Winchester in May of 1954. It really hit a home to me. I was 13 and listening to the 500 on the radio that fateful day. It was good to see your web site. To see your tributes to Dave and all the pictures of the family. Life goes on, but it is good to remember.
